What this place is
This is where Christopher Carey keeps everything — the fourteen-year rock machine program, the field guides, the shop plans, the bucket list, the fanfiction, the diary, the sighting report he is still not ready to talk about. Not a portfolio, not a blog. A workspace: the kitchen table after work, made of HTML, with the notebooks left open on purpose.
It was made by him, for him, and mostly about him, which is the correct number of people for a personal website. If you are not Christopher, welcome anyway — the coffee is theoretical but the documents are real, and they are meant to be read in any order, including none.
A note on the name: a christmas cherry is a portal. Time travel is possible in the digital era; this page runs on 1994 architecture for exactly that reason.

A push-behind, multi-modal sensor platform for the detection, classification, and centimeter-accurate geospatial registration of Hexagonaria percarinata — the Petoskey stone — in heterogeneous beach gravels of the Lake Michigan shoreline. It finds one rock. It finds it extremely well.
The 25.0 lb governor is not a joke. It is Michigan law. See Operator's Manual §9, Regulatory Compliance.
The problem
Every year, on the beaches of Little Traverse Bay and the greater northwest Lower Peninsula, thousands of otherwise productive Americans assume the posture known regionally as the Petoskey stoop — bent at the waist, eyes eighteen inches from wet gravel, sun on the back of the neck — for a per-stone yield that has not measurably improved since the stone was designated Michigan's official state stone in 1965.
We believe the stoop is a solved problem. We believe it is solved by a lawnmower-sized cart carrying an industrial polarized-strobe camera, a 1.2 GHz ground-penetrating radar, a spring-loaded mechanical rock tapper, and a real-time-kinematic GPS receiver accurate to the width of a thumbnail. We believe this because Christopher believed it first.

Program History
The Crystal Kart is not a 2026 project. It is a 2012 project that took fourteen years to become a document, worked on at a kitchen table after work, most nights, in thirty-one notebooks.

Multi-Modal Optical, Electromagnetic, and Acoustic Discrimination of Hexagonaria percarinata in Heterogeneous Littoral Gravels
For Christopher, who first insisted the rocks could be found by machine.
Abstract
The Petoskey stone — fossilized Devonian colonial coral, Hexagonaria percarinata — is visually cryptic when dry, chemically ordinary limestone, and mixed at low concentration into shoreline gravels containing granite, basalt, chert, quartz, and non-fossiliferous carbonates. This paper defines a three-channel discrimination doctrine for the PS-IMC Mk. I survey cart (the Crystal Kart): polarized-strobe machine vision, 1.2 GHz ground-penetrating radar, and mechanical impact acoustics, fused by a moisture-gated classifier and registered against RTK-GNSS coordinates at ±1.5 cm. We characterize the target, the confuser set, the physics of each channel in wet and dry states, the training corpus, and the validation protocol. Known limitations are disclosed in §9 with a candor unusual for this document class. Regulatory constraints, including the State of Michigan's 25-pound annual collection limit, are treated as firmware, not as suggestions.
1Introduction
Manual Petoskey stone survey is a mature technology. Its operator interface — the stoop — has remained stable since at least the designation of the stone as Michigan's official state stone in 1965 [1, 2], and its principal sensor, the human eye, performs superbly on wet stone and abysmally on dry. The manual method's weaknesses are threefold: throughput is limited by lumbar endurance; recall collapses on the dry upper beach, where the stone's diagnostic pattern is masked by weathering and limestone dust; and position information about seen-but-unretrieved stones is stored in a medium (human spatial memory on a uniform gravel field) with a demonstrated failure rate approaching totality.
The PS-IMC Mk. I replaces the stoop with a 50 cm instrumented swath moving at walking speed. It does not pick up stones. It finds them, logs them to the centimeter, photographs them in context, and leads the operator back with a phone. The retrieval of the stone — the good part — remains a human joy and a human responsibility. We consider this division of labor to be the program's central design insight, and also a way of avoiding building a robot arm.
2The target
Hexagonaria percarinata is a rugose colonial coral of the Devonian period, approximately 350 million years old, occurring in the Gravel Point Formation of the Traverse Group in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan [1, 2]. Glacial action plucked, tumbled, and redistributed fragments of the fossilized colonies along the Lake Michigan shoreline, where they are collected today. The stone is named for the Odawa chief Pet-O-Sega ("rising sun"), for whom the city of Petoskey is also named [2].
Three physical properties of the target drive the entire sensing architecture:
Composition. The fossil is preserved in calcite (CaCO3), making the stone a limestone — softer (Mohs ~3), less dense, and more acoustically lossy than the silicate igneous and metamorphic rocks (granite, basalt, quartzite) that dominate the beach mixture.
Structure. The colony is a close-packed array of hexagonal corallites, typically a few millimeters to roughly a centimeter across, each with a dark center and thin septa radiating to the corallite wall (Fig. W-1). This ordered internal geometry — repeated, oriented, and mineralogically contrasting — is what separates the target from every amorphous or merely layered rock on the beach.
Wetting response. Dry, the pattern is masked by micro-roughness and dust; the stone reads as generic gray limestone. Wetted, surface water fills micro-voids and changes the optical interface, and the honeycomb snaps into high contrast. This single fact — the target's visibility is a function of moisture — dictates the dual-state doctrine of §5.
3The confuser set
The PS-IMC is not asked to identify rocks. It is asked to reject them — thousands of them, per hour, wet and dry — while passing exactly one species. The rejection targets, in order of difficulty:

Program position: the Charlevoix stone is a fine stone and a worthy fossil, and any operator who keeps one will hear no criticism from the manufacturer. The machine, however, was made a promise.
4Discrimination physics
4.1 Optical channel — polarized strobe imaging
A downward-facing 5 MP global-shutter industrial camera images the swath under a strobed, linearly polarized LED ring synchronized to the shutter (Operator's Manual, Appendix B.3). Cross-polarization suppresses specular glare from wet stone surfaces and standing water film — the dominant noise source on the splash line — so the camera sees the pattern, not the sun. Frames feed a segmentation CNN trained on the corallite geometry of Fig. W-1 under two weight sets: a high-contrast set for wet stone, and a texture set tuned for the faint "ghost" honeycomb visible on dry, dusty surfaces. The optical channel is the only channel that can distinguish fossiliferous from plain limestone, and therefore holds final veto authority on every tag.
4.2 Electromagnetic channel — 1.2 GHz ground-penetrating radar
A skid-mounted 1.2 GHz GPR antenna maintains a small standoff above the gravel and measures the bulk dielectric response of the top few centimeters of beach matrix, including partially buried stones — a population invisible to the camera entirely. Calcite's relative permittivity (εr ≈ 7–8.5) sits measurably above quartz (≈4.5) and granite (≈5–6.5), and the radar's wave-velocity profile separates carbonate targets from the silicate background (Fig. W-2). Two honest caveats attach to this channel and are expanded in §9: basalt overlaps calcite dielectrically, and liquid water (εr ≈ 80) dominates everything it touches, which is why the EM channel is re-tasked as a moisture sensor in wet mode (§5).
4.3 Acoustic channel — mechanical impact and ring-down
A cam-driven, spring-loaded tapper delivers a calibrated mechanical impact to stones passing under the sensor pod — the instrumented version of the oldest field test in geology — while a contact accelerometer in a trailing polyurethane shoe records the response. Dense silicates ring: a clean, sustained, high-frequency decay. Porous fossiliferous limestone thuds: low velocity, heavy damping, and a short, scattered decay tail as the impact energy is absorbed and re-scattered by the corallite fabric. The discriminant is not the impact but the ring-down — a continuous wavelet transform of the decay envelope, classifying damping ratio and spectral centroid. Representative compressional-wave velocities are charted in Fig. W-3; the overlaps visible there are precisely why the wavelet features, not raw velocity, carry the decision weight.
5The moisture-state doctrine
Moisture inverts the reliability of the sensor suite. Wet stone is a gift to the camera and a catastrophe for the radar; dry stone is the reverse; the tapper prefers whatever the water dampens least. No fixed sensor weighting survives contact with an actual beach, which presents bone-dry berm, damp morning sand, splash line, and standing water within a single 100-meter transect. The PS-IMC therefore computes a continuous Moisture_Flag (0.0–1.0) from EM surface reflectivity and image saturation statistics, and gates every downstream feature weight on it.

6Fusion architecture
The three channels run independent feature pipelines and meet at a decision-level fusion stage — late fusion, chosen so that a channel degraded by conditions can be discounted without retraining its peers. The gating network applies the moisture doctrine of §5; the classifier is a gradient-boosted ensemble small enough to run in real time beside the vision network on the onboard edge computer.

7Training corpus and calibration
The classifier is trained on a curated physical reference collection: 100 verified Hexagonaria specimens spanning 2–15 cm and all erosion grades, against 400 negative controls drawn from the same shorelines (granite, basalt, chert, quartz, plain limestone, slag, and a deliberately unfair number of Charlevoix stones). Every specimen is logged on a static bench rig in four environmental states: A, bone dry and dusted; B, damp; C, dripping wet; D, buried under 2 cm of dry sand. The optical corpus (≈5,000 images) is polygon-annotated; GPR A-scans and accelerometer traces are archived raw alongside extracted features, so future revisions can re-derive everything. Rev C's most consequential change was quadrupling the State-A (dry) corpus after early field trials revealed the machine had quietly become a connoisseur of wet rocks only.
8Validation protocol
Bench metrics do not survive beaches. The acceptance test is therefore physical: a 100-meter shoreline transect is seeded with verified specimens at surveyed positions — surface-placed, half-buried, and fully buried; wet zone and dry berm — and the cart is walked over it blind. Acceptance requires: recall ≥ 0.90 on surface and half-buried targets; false tags ≤ 2 per 100 m; every tag's RTK position within 3 cm of survey truth; and zero auto-tags on the planted Charlevoix stones. The seeded stones are recovered at the end of the test, counted against the 25-pound ledger like everything else, and returned to the reference collection. The lake is not told which stones were planted.
9Limitations and honest disclosures
This section is unusual for the genre and mandatory for this program.
9.1 Basalt shares the target's dielectric neighborhood. Fig. W-2 shows it plainly: a wet basalt cobble and a Petoskey stone can be indistinguishable to the EM channel. The system does not pretend otherwise; basalt rejection is carried acoustically and optically, and the EM channel alone never tags anything.
9.2 The Rev B "hexagonal diffraction resonance" is hereby demoted. An earlier concept proposed that at millimeter-wave frequencies (75–110 GHz) the corallite lattice would act as a spatial diffraction grating, returning a phase-coherent backscatter signature unique to the target. It remains a lovely idea. At the Mk. I's 1.2 GHz operating frequency, the in-material wavelength (~9 cm) is more than an order of magnitude larger than the corallite pitch; the lattice is deeply sub-wavelength and the radar sees only bulk dielectric. The mmWave concept is retained in the appendices of history as a hypothesis for a future benchtop instrument, and Rev C apologizes for the enthusiasm of Rev B.
9.3 Wet Favosites remains the hard case. A wet Charlevoix stone defeats casual human collectors and, at certain corallite scales, presses the vision channel to its limits. Current doctrine (flag, photograph, never auto-tag) trades recall for integrity. The program considers a machine that confidently mislabels a Favosites to be worse than no machine.
9.4 The numbers in this paper are representative, not gospel. Published rock properties span wide ranges; beach populations are local; moisture is continuous. The machine is calibrated against its own reference collection under its own sensors (§7). The charts are for orientation, and for the pleasure of seeing water's permittivity annotated at 80.
9.5 The machine cannot tell you why you want the stone. Out of scope for all planned revisions.
10Regulatory environment
Petoskey stone collection on Michigan state-owned land, including Great Lakes bottomlands, is limited to 25 pounds of rock and mineral specimens per person per year [3, 4, 7]. This is a real rule with real enforcement: in 2015 the Michigan DNR confiscated a 93-pound Petoskey stone recovered near Northport, which now sits on public display in Detroit [5]. Collection within National Park Service units — including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — is prohibited outright [7].
The PS-IMC implements both constraints as firmware: a cumulative haul ledger with a hard 25.0-pound annual governor, and a geofence that refuses survey operation inside federal exclusion polygons. Details, including the governor's total indifference to the operator's feelings, are given in Operator's Manual §9.

Wheeled Multi-Modal Apparatus for the Detection, Classification, and Geospatial Registration of Fossilized Colonial Coral
Abstract
A push-behind wheeled apparatus identifies fossilized colonial coral (Petoskey stones, Hexagonaria percarinata) within heterogeneous beach gravel without retrieving, moving, or disturbing any stone. The apparatus fuses a polarized strobed imaging subsystem, a ground-penetrating radar subsystem, and a mechanical impact-acoustic subsystem through a moisture-gated classifier, and registers each detection as a centimeter-accurate geospatial tag with a contextual photograph, served to an operator's telephone for manual retrieval. A firmware mass governor renders the apparatus incapable of contributing to the collection of more than twenty-five pounds of stone per operator per annum, in conformity with the laws of the State of Michigan. Summary of the Invention
[0007]The invention is a manually propelled cart of approximately lawnmower dimensions carrying three sensing subsystems whose failure modes are complementary with respect to moisture: an imaging subsystem that excels on wet stone; an electromagnetic subsystem that excels on dry stone and buried stone; and an impact-acoustic subsystem that distinguishes the soft, lossy ring-down of fossiliferous calcite from the confident ring of the igneous imposters. A processor computes a continuous moisture state and gates the fusion of the three subsystems accordingly, such that the apparatus performs on the full transect of an actual beach rather than on the idealized beach of the laboratory.

Detailed Description
[0012]Referring to FIG. 1, apparatus 10 comprises a corrosion-resistant aluminum chassis borne on low-pressure balloon tires 20 selected to roll over dry sand, wet gravel, and the operator's expectations without sinking. Push handle 12 places the operator behind the apparatus, in the traditional position of a person mowing a lawn, but happier. Mast-mounted RTK-GNSS antenna 14 receives carrier-phase corrections resolving position to approximately ±1.5 centimeters. Weatherproof enclosure 16 houses the edge compute module and battery 30, and carries sunlight-readable display 32 at handle height.
[0013]Articulated sensor pod 18 rides beneath the chassis on a floating suspension. The pod carries downward-facing global-shutter camera 24 within polarized strobe ring 22; ground-penetrating radar antenna and skid 26, the skid maintaining standoff over the gravel in the manner of a small, dutiful ski; and cam-driven mechanical tapper 28, which strikes passing stones with a calibrated affection and listens to what they say back.
[0014]Referring to FIG. 2, subsystems 40, 42, and 44 feed edge compute module 46, which computes the moisture state of the scanned surface, gates the fusion weights accordingly, and classifies each candidate stone. A classification is registered only with concurring optical evidence of hexagonal corallites (FIG. 3: corallite 60, septa 62, center 64, wall 66); the remaining subsystems, however confident, cannot outvote the camera. Confirmed detections receive a position from receiver 48, a row in geodatabase 50, a pin and thumbnail on operator phone 52 via a local wireless network, and one beep from annunciator 54.
[0015]Haul governor 56 maintains a cumulative ledger of stone mass retrieved per operator per annum and, upon the ledger reaching twenty-five pounds (25.0 lb), disables tagging until the following year, displaying the message SEASON COMPLETE — SEE YOU IN SPRING. The governor has no override. The applicant has been asked, repeatedly, at family gatherings, whether the governor has an override. It does not have an override.
[0016]In embodiments, the apparatus refuses to power its sensing subsystems within geofenced federal exclusion zones, including national lakeshores, where collection is prohibited; within such zones the display shows the stones nothing but respect.

The PS-IMC Mk. I — sold under the name Crystal Kart, spelled with a K for reasons marketing described as “vibes” — is a manually pushed all-terrain survey cart. Part numbering below follows FIG. 1 of the Patent Application, which the operator is encouraged to read while the battery charges.

4Quick start
- Charge the battery to full; verify tire pressure 3–5 psi (soft is correct; they should look slightly embarrassed).
- Power on at the enclosure. Allow 60–90 seconds for the RTK receiver to report
FIXon the display. Surveying withoutFIXproduces pins accurate to "somewhere on this beach," which is the condition the machine exists to end. - On your phone, join Wi-Fi network
CHRISTMASCHERRY-FIELD(password inside the enclosure lid) and openhttp://cart.local. - Confirm the season ledger on the app's home screen. Note remaining governor headroom before forming ambitions.
- Lower the sensor pod until the GPR skid kisses the gravel. The correct gap is the thickness of a Petoskey Area visitor guide, which is supplied.
- Walk. Target pace 1.0–1.5 m/s. The cart sets the pace of a thoughtful person; match it.
- On each beep, keep walking (§5.4). The pin is not going anywhere. Neither is the stone. It has waited 350 million years; it will wait until the end of your pass.
- At survey end, retrieve stones by pin (§6), weigh each on the supplied hanging scale, and log the mass. The ledger believes you. Do not make it wrong to.
5Field procedure
5.1 Survey pattern
Survey in parallel shore-parallel passes with 10 cm swath overlap, working from the dry berm toward the splash line. The app records coverage as you go; gaps render as unswept lanes and will bother you exactly as much as they should.
5.2 Dry zone
Dry mode leans on radar and tapper (White Paper §5). Expect fewer optical confirmations and more FLAG entries; the dry berm is where the buried population lives, and half-buried tags here are the machine earning its keep.
5.3 Splash line
Wet mode is the machine at the height of its powers: the camera sees everything the water reveals. Time splash-line passes between wave sets. If a wave overtakes the cart, stop, lift the pod, and allow the skid to drain while you reconsider the wave.
5.4 On the beep
Do not run to the stone. Do not abandon the pass. The professional practice is to complete the survey and retrieve on the return leg, pin by pin. Operators who sprint at the first beep tag one stone per outing. Operators who trust the pins tag the beach.
6The retrieval app
The cart hosts its own offline map server; no cellular coverage is required, which is correct, because there is none out there anyway.
- Join
CHRISTMASCHERRY-FIELDand open the map. Your position and the pins share one coordinate frame, accurate to a thumbnail's width. - Walk to a pin. When your position dot covers the pin, stop and look down. You are standing over the stone, or unforgivably close.
- Open the pin's photograph. Match the corallite pattern to what you see. Lift the stone. This moment is the entire program; take your time with it.
- Tap Mark Collected, weigh the stone on the supplied hanging scale, and enter the mass. The pin turns green and the governor ledger updates.
- Stones judged unworthy on inspection may be left, and the pin dismissed as Declined. The machine logs no opinion about your standards.

9Regulatory compliance
This section is the least funny part of the website on purpose.
9.1 The 25-pound rule. On Michigan state-owned land — which includes Great Lakes bottomlands up to the ordinary high-water mark — an individual may collect no more than 25 pounds of rocks, minerals, and invertebrate fossils per year. The limit is a total, not per variety and not per beach. The PS-IMC implements it as a firmware governor with a persistent ledger and no override. When the display reads SEASON COMPLETE, the season is complete.
9.2 Federal exclusion zones. Rock collection is prohibited within National Park Service units, including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The cart's geofence disables all sensing inside these polygons and displays FED ZONE — SENSORS OFF. Within them, the machine looks at nothing, and the operator is invited to simply enjoy some of the most beautiful shoreline on Earth like a regular person.
9.3 Private land. Permission first. The cart cannot detect property lines, only rocks, and the program declines to expand its scope.
9.4 Precedence. Where this manual and current Michigan DNR regulations disagree, the DNR is correct, the manual is wrong, and Rev D will say thank you.

Crystal Pack — A Backpack-Portable Survey System
For the beaches the Kart cannot reach. Requested by Christopher before the Kart's paint was dry.
1Rationale
The Crystal Kart is the flagship, and nothing on this page changes that. But the Kart has one honest limitation: it goes where wheels go. Cobble fields too coarse to roll; bluff-base and island shorelines reached only on foot; airline travel to other people's beaches; and one beach in particular, whose location Christopher declines to disclose, citing precedent, tradition, and the phrase "you'll see."
The Crystal Pack redistributes the Kart's entire sensing chain into approximately seven kilograms of backpack and hand wand. It trades swath, endurance, and a little positioning precision for the single capability the Kart cannot offer: it goes where feet go.
2Configuration
The pack carries compute, battery, and the RTK antenna at its highest point. A shielded umbilical runs to a hand wand swept over the gravel in the manner of a metal detector — except that it is not detecting metal, and would be embarrassed to. The operator's phone remains the user interface, exactly as on the Kart, and both machines write to the same geodatabase schema: a stone found by either enters the same family ledger, against the same 25.0-pound governor, announced by the same single beep.
3Sensor head
The head is the Kart's sensor pod shrunk to a 17 cm disc: the same polarized strobe-and-camera doctrine, a compact 2.4 GHz radar patch in place of the 1.2 GHz skid antenna (shallower penetration — the top ~3 cm — accepted as the cost of carrying it uphill), and the tapper miniaturized to a micro-solenoid contact tip, approximately the size of its own courage. A brush skirt maintains standoff, sweeps aside dry sand, and shades the image field from direct sun.

7Open engineering questions
7.1 Sweep motion blur. The strobe freezes the frame; the harder problem is classification during an accelerating hand sweep. The head's IMU gates inference to sweep speeds under ~1 m/s; out-of-envelope frames are dropped and the wand vibrates gently, which is the machine's way of asking you to slow down.
7.2 RTK on a walking human. The antenna sways with gait. An IMU-derived tilt and lever-arm correction projects the fix from pack apex to sensor head; the ±2.5 cm projection is degraded relative to the Kart and still narrower than any stone worth bending for.
7.3 Radar standoff variation. The brush skirt holds near-constant standoff, and a ranging gate rejects returns that move with the swing rather than with the ground. Patch-antenna clutter during fast sweeps remains the study's largest open item, and is disclosed here in the family tradition (White Paper §9).
7.4 The operator. The stoop does not return — but its cousin, the sweep, asks its own price over four hours. An ergonomics review is scheduled with the family's most honest critic, who has already seen the drawings and said the person in FIG. P-1 "looks tired."
7.5 The name. "Crystal Pack" is provisional. Alternatives under review include "Kart: Unplugged." Christopher has a vote. Christopher may have all the votes.
Popcorn Summer
A Seasonal Aesthetic Declaration · Christmas Cherry Instruments
Definitely late. Usually burnt. Never on-trend. This declaration specifies a summer aesthetic comprising an exposed midriff, an unserious demeanour, and a temporal offset of not less than one year from the trend it references. The offset is not an error. It is the specification.
§0 — The Look
The specification below is precise and it is also entirely words, which is a poor way to convey something whose whole argument is visual. Three plates, then.
FIG. P-1 — The silhouette, dimensioned. The exposed band is the specification; everything else is support structure.
On the bimbo axis. The look is glossy, hyper-feminine, maximal and completely unserious — and it is worn by a guy, which is the entire proposition. Nothing here is ironic. Irony would be a way of not committing, and the declared doneness is burnt, which is the opposite of not committing. The hoops are real hoops. The gloss is real gloss.

Background
Two seasons constitute the prior art. Hot Girl Summer (2019) established that a season may be declared by a single person and adopted by everyone else. Brat Summer (2024) established that the declaration may be lime green and slightly hostile, and that this improves it.
Both were named while apparently still underway. Neither actually was.
The Lateness Problem
A season becomes nameable only once it has accumulated enough shared features to be described. It accumulates those features by happening. Therefore, at the moment a season becomes describable, it is already over, and every declaration of a season is a description of a past one.
This is true of Hot Girl Summer and Brat Summer as well. The distinction claimed here is not that Popcorn Summer is late — all of them are late — but that Popcorn Summer is the first to put the number on the front page. 802 days. Measured from the release of the referenced work to the date of this filing.
The Popcorn Principle
A kernel is small, hard, dense, and inedible. Under sustained heat it turns itself inside out: it becomes several times its former size, mostly air, soft, pale, and shareable. This is an irreversible structural change and it cannot be performed gently.
Held on the heat, some of what bloomed will scorch. This is not a failure of technique. There is no setting at which every kernel pops and nothing burns; the bottom of the bowl is always part of the method. A person deciding to take up more room, out loud, later than everyone else, will burn some of it. The declaration accepts this in advance.
Detailed Description
§1 — The midriff. Load-bearing. The exposed section is not a garment choice but a structural one: it carries the entire declaration, and no other element may be substituted for it. A guy, in a crop top, in the wrong year.
§2 — Palette. Red-and-white striped bucket, butter, salt, and the scorch. Cherry #d03b3b is the primary; it is also the house colour, which is convenient and was not planned.
§3 — Doneness. The declared operating point is burnt. See scale below. Golden is available and is not being pursued.
§4 — Comportment. Unserious, sincere, loud, kind. The reference is never explained. If asked what Popcorn Summer is, the correct answer is “it's Popcorn Summer.”
§5 — Timing. Arrive after. Always after.
1 — Pale. Bloomed but timid. Reads as an accident.
2 — Golden. Optimal by every published standard. On-trend. Not pursued.
3 — Amber. Past optimal. First scorch notes. Still deniable.

The 802-day figure will grow. It is measured to the filing date and is not refreshed. By the time this is read the offset will be worse, which is consistent.
Rugrats as Adults — in 3D
Feasibility of Volumetric Reconstruction of a Deliberately Malformed Visual Grammar
Canon has already aged them. All Growed Up (1998) did it once as a tenth-anniversary special; All Grown Up! (2003) did it for five seasons. Both were flat. This study asks the harder question, which is what happens when you give them volume — and argues that volume is the one thing the style was built to refuse.
The Design Problem
The Klasky Csupo house style is not stylised in the ordinary sense. It is deliberately wrong: eyes at different heights and different sizes, skulls that bulge on one side, line weight that varies within a single contour, colours that sit slightly off from each other. It reads as if a child drew it, which is the point, because the show is about what the world looks like from the floor.
Three-dimensional rendering imposes exactly the properties that grammar rejects. A volumetric model has consistent topology — the skull is the same skull from every angle. It has coherent lighting, so the wrongness reads as a modelling defect rather than a choice. It has a stable silhouette, so asymmetry becomes deformity.
The wrongness only works because it does not resolve. Rotate it and it resolves, and once it resolves it is just an ugly baby.
Reading B — stereoscopic. The 1994 sense. Red and cyan, cardboard glasses, one gimmick, no change to the drawing at all. The line work stays wrong and simply acquires depth.
These are opposite proposals. A resolves the style and destroys it. B leaves it untouched and pushes it at your face.

Recommendation
This study recommends Reading B, on the grounds that this website is a 1994 portal and in 1994 "in 3D" meant a pair of cardboard glasses and a headache. Reading A is the more expensive way to arrive at a worse result.
Open Engineering Questions
Q1. Which reading did the declarant intend? The study has assumed B. If A was meant, §2 becomes the whole project rather than an objection to it.
Q2. Adults at what age? All Grown Up! stopped at thirteen. The interesting version is thirty-four, which is old enough for the babies to have the same problems their parents had, which was always the joke underneath.
Q3. Does Reptar scale? He was a rubber suit inside a cartoon — already two levels of fake. In 3D he becomes a third.

Three girls, three networks, three answers to the same question: what was a girl on television in 1994 allowed to be in charge of? They are usually ranked by preference. This document ranks them by what they control, which produces a different and more interesting order.
§1 — Clarissa Darling
Nickelodeon · 1991–1994 · Clarissa Explains It All
Clarissa talks directly to you. She pauses the scene, explains her family, runs a computer, illustrates her situation with graphics she made herself, and then resumes. No episode is about her being a girl; episodes are about a problem, which she explains. She controls the medium. She is not a character being shown to you — she is operating the show.
§2 — Topanga Lawrence
ABC / TGIF · 1993–2000 · Boy Meets World
Topanga arrives as a philosopher. She refuses the format outright — refuses the haircut, the clique, the premise that school matters in the way everyone says it does. Over seven seasons the show finds this inconvenient and rewrites her, steadily, into the girlfriend. By the end her defining trait is the relationship. She begins with the most agency of the three and ends with the least, and the loss is gradual enough that it was widely experienced as a love story.

Nickelodeon · 1994–1998 · The Secret World of Alex Mack
Alex has actual power — she can melt, move objects, throw current — acquired by industrial accident, and she must conceal it or be taken by the chemical plant. Her agency is real and must remain secret to remain hers. Every episode is the arithmetic of when it is safe to be what she is.

§5 — Verdict
Clarissa. Not on charisma, and not on preference — on the last row. Topanga and Alex are inside their programmes and subject to them: one is rewritten by her format, the other is endangered by hers. Clarissa is the only one who knows she is on television, and knowing it is what makes her untouchable. The show cannot quietly turn her into somebody's girlfriend because she would stop and tell you it was happening.
Alex places second and the gap is small. Her power is the most real of the three and the cost of hiding it is honestly depicted, which is more than most shows for children attempted.
Topanga places third, which is not a criticism of Topanga. She is the only one of the three who was actively taken apart, and she started from the highest position. Third place here is a finding about the writers' room, not about her.
The Purple Wendigo
Good Harbor Bay · Leelanau County, Michigan · Lake Michigan shoreline
Every field program has one observation it cannot process. This is Christmas Cherry's. It was made without instruments, without a second witness, and without any of the discipline the rest of this portal insists on — and it is the only entry here that no one has offered to explain.
§1 — Locality
Good Harbor Bay lies on the Lake Michigan shore of the Leelanau Peninsula, inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, facing north-northwest between Pyramid Point and the Leland side. The beach is cobble in stretches, which is why anyone is standing on it in the first place.
This is material to the report. Good Harbor is a stone beach — the same shoreline, the same glacial cobble, and the same reason to be out there at a strange hour as everything else documented in this portal. The witness was, in all likelihood, looking down. Whatever was seen was seen by someone who looked up.
§2 — The Observation
This section is intentionally incomplete and is reserved for the witness.
The report records three things and declines to invent a fourth: that it was at Good Harbor Bay; that it was a face; and that it was purple.
An earlier revision of this page described the subject as "tall." That detail came from the drafter, not the witness, and has been struck. It is noted here rather than quietly deleted, because a sighting report that edits itself silently is worth nothing.
Substantial lore is held by the witness and is not yet in this file. Until it is, everything below §3 is scaffolding.
§3 — On the Colour
The colour is the anomalous datum and the reason this report exists.
Nothing in the traditional description is purple. Accounts of the wendigo describe something gaunt, frost-bitten, ash and bone and hunger — a palette of deprivation. And the subject here is reported as a face, which is its own kind of detail: faces are what people remember when there was nothing else to see. Purple is a colour of dusk on open water, of a specific hour on a north-facing bay when the light comes off the lake rather than the sky.
Two readings follow. Either the colour is atmospheric — the hour supplying it, in which case the report is about light. Or the colour is intrinsic, in which case this is not a wendigo at all and has simply been filed under the nearest available name. The second reading is the more interesting one and is the reason the file stays open.
§4 — Open Questions
Q1. What year, and what hour? A north-facing bay at dusk is a specific and reproducible lighting condition. If the hour is known, §3 becomes testable.
Q2. Standing or moving? Every account turns on this and the file does not have it.
Q3. Was the witness alone? — recorded above as no corroboration sought, which is not the same as none available.
Q4. Does it get a real name? See the note above. The program recommends yes.
§5 — Disposition
Unresolved, and deliberately so. The Crystal Kart was built to settle a question about rocks and it settles it to ±1.5 cm. There is no instrument in the $100,000 bill of materials that would have helped here, and the program is not proposing to build one.
Some things you find on that shoreline get a white paper. One of them gets a page that just says it happened.
The Lake Leelanau Site
Lake Leelanau · Leelanau County, Michigan
A pot shop that is also a coffee shop that is also a cyber cafe, at a real address, twenty minutes from Good Harbor Bay. This document is the strategy. It is deliberately ordered so that the cheapest question is answered first, because one of the questions below can end the project outright and it costs nothing to ask.
§1 — The Concept
Three businesses that share a room and a century each:
The coffee shop is the front, the hours, and the reason to come in when you do not want anything. The cyber cafe is 1994 — terminals, time on a machine, somebody's high score. The pot shop is 2026 and is the part with a license number.
The unifying idea is the same one this whole portal runs on: a room where the decades sit down together and nobody is asked to leave.
§2 — The Gating Question
Michigan legalised adult-use cannabis under the MRTMA in 2018. It did not legalise it everywhere. Municipalities opt in — a township or village must affirmatively adopt an ordinance permitting adult-use establishments, and a great many in northern Michigan have not.
So the first question is not about money, design, or build-out. It is: which municipality is the parcel in, and has that municipality opted in? Lake Leelanau straddles township lines, so the parcel's actual jurisdiction has to be pulled from the county, not assumed from the mailing address.
If the answer is no, there are three moves and only three: petition the municipality, drop the cannabis leg and build the cafe, or find a parcel in a township that has opted in. Everything else in this plan is downstream of that one phone call.
§3 — The Three Do Not Legally Share a Counter
This is the constraint most likely to be discovered late and expensively.
In Michigan a retailer licence does not permit on-site consumption. Consumption is a separate licence class (a designated consumption establishment), and co-locating cannabis with food service runs into both state rules and the local health department. The romantic version — one counter, order a latte and an eighth, sit down — is not the version that gets licensed.
The workable structures are: two legally distinct operations sharing a building with a controlled doorway; a cafe with a separately licensed retail suite; or a cafe now and a licence later. Design the floorplan around this constraint rather than discovering it after the drawings.
§4 — Parcel and Zoning
The parcel reads residential. That raises, in order: current zoning; whether commercial use is permitted or needs a special use permit or rezoning; setback and buffer rules, which for cannabis retail are typically distance-based from schools, parks and churches and are set locally; parking; septic and well capacity for food service; and whether the existing structure can take commercial occupancy at all.
§5 — Sequence
Step 1. Confirm the municipality from the parcel record. Free.
Step 2. Read that municipality's cannabis ordinance, or confirm none exists. Free.
Step 3. Confirm zoning and permitted use for the parcel. Free to cheap.
Step 4. Only now: a Michigan cannabis attorney and a pre-application conversation with the municipality. This is the first line item that costs money and it should stay that way.
Step 5. Concept, floorplan, and capital — sized to whichever of the three legs survived steps 1–4.
§6 — Open Questions
Q1. Does Christopher own this parcel, have an option on it, or is it a target? The whole plan changes shape depending on which.
Q2. Is there a structure on it now, and what is it?
Q3. Which leg is the actual dream — the shop, the cafe, or the room? If the room is the point, the cafe alone gets there and skips §2 entirely.

Christopher Carey is from here. Grand Traverse Bay comes in from Lake Michigan in two arms with Old Mission Peninsula down the middle, and almost everything worth doing here is arranged around that shape. It is the Cherry Capital of the World, which is why the mascot of this website is a cherry and why nobody should act surprised about it.
This is a bucket list, and it is a real one — the boxes work, and they remember. Nothing on it is a stunt. Most of it is standing somewhere specific and letting it be the thing it already is.

The Three Stones

Three things worth bending down for, from three completely unrelated origins. One is a dead animal. One is a rare gem from four hundred miles north. One is industrial waste. They are grouped here only because the same person picks up all three, which turns out to be the most interesting thing about the list.
§1 — Petoskey Stone

A colony of coral that died in a warm shallow sea when Michigan was near the equator, then got buried, mineralised, and finally scraped up and scattered by glaciers. Each hexagon was one animal. The dark dot at the centre of each is where its mouth was.
Field test: dry, it is a grey rock and nobody would look twice. Wet it. The pattern only resolves when it is wet or polished, which is why every serious hunter walks the waterline rather than the dry beach.
§2 — Leland Blue

In the 1870s Leland ran an iron smelter on the river mouth. The waste slag was dumped into Lake Michigan. A century and a half of waves have been rounding and frosting it ever since, and people now drive a long way to Fishtown and walk that beach looking for it.
Field test: look for vesicles — small round gas bubbles frozen in the matrix. Natural stone does not do that; molten industrial slag does. It is often lighter than it looks and the blue is frequently banded rather than uniform.
It is garbage. It is the discarded byproduct of a failed nineteenth-century iron operation, and it is one of the most sought-after things on this shoreline. The lake worked on it for a hundred and fifty years and now it is beautiful. This portal has a lot of opinions about that — see CC-PS-001, §The Popcorn Principle.
§3 — Michigan Greenstone

The rarest of the three and the only actual gem. It fills gas cavities in the ancient Keweenawan lavas of the Upper Peninsula, and it is prized for the segmented turtleback pattern that shifts as you turn it in the light.
Note the geography: this one is not a Traverse City stone. The Keweenaw is roughly a day's drive north of everything else in this portal.
Michigan limits removal to 25 lb per person per year from state-owned land and bottomlands. This is real law and it is the reason the Crystal Kart carries a firmware mass governor — see CC-OM-001, §9.
Private beaches, park rules and local ordinances all vary. Ask first; the answer is usually generous.
§5 — The Shop
Six designs, and a plan: a jewellery shop in downtown Leland.
Leland is the correct town and it is not a sentimental choice. Leland Blue is from Leland — the slag came out of the smelter at the river mouth and went into the lake right there. Selling it a hundred yards from where it was thrown away, a century and a half later, as jewellery, is the whole story of the material and you do not have to explain it to anybody standing in Fishtown.
And it is a sentimental choice, actually. Christopher was baptised in Fishtown. The slag went into the water at the river mouth and got turned into something people want; he went into the water at the same river mouth. Same water, same few hundred feet of shoreline, both of them changed by it. A shop there is not opening a business in a tourist town — it is going back to the spot and standing in it on purpose.
The bar is the signature piece. Three stones in a row, same size, same setting, deliberately no hierarchy — the fossil, the gem and the industrial waste given identical treatment. That is an argument, and it is the one this whole guide has been making.
Which means it can happen first. It is the cheaper, faster, lower-risk of the two ideas, and it puts him behind a counter in Leland selling the thing he already spends his time finding. Sequence the jewellery shop first, and let it fund the argument about the other site.
§6 — The Workshop
Design a piece, price it honestly, and get the listing text out. The numbers below include Etsy's real fee structure, because the usual way a maker loses money is pricing off materials and forgetting that the platform takes a cut of the total, shipping included.
2.2–2.6× is the usual handmade range. Below 2× you are working for free once a piece fails at polish. Greenstone is the one where the stone dominates cost.

§4 — Why These Three
A fossil, a gem, and a piece of factory waste. The fossil is worth picking up because something lived. The gem is worth picking up because it is rare and hard to find. And the slag is worth picking up because the lake spent a hundred and fifty years making something discarded into something people want.
Those are three completely different arguments for the same gesture, and one person holding all three of them at once is not being inconsistent. He is being thorough.

The Explorers' League had funded eleven expeditions that year and Brannic Wetstone had been on none of them. He was not bitter about it. He was, in the estimation of the League, a competent surveyor with an unserious specialty, and they were not wrong.
"Gold," Grandmaster Thaurissan had said, not unkindly, tapping the map. "Titan relics. The vaults under Uldaman. That is what a prospector prospects for, lad."
Brannic had said nothing, because what he wanted to say sounded foolish out loud and he knew it. He wanted a grey stone. Not a gem, not a vein, not a relic. A grey stone off a cold shore, the kind you would step on a thousand times without looking down, that had a hundred small rooms inside it. He had seen one once, in the hand of a fisherman in Menethil Harbour, and the fisherman had thrown it back.
He had thought about that thrown stone every day for six years.
So he left. He signed nothing out and took nothing but his pick, his bedroll, and a tin cup, and he walked out through the Great Forge gate at the hour when the smiths bank their fires, and nobody stopped him, because nobody was watching a man with an unserious specialty.
The road down out of Dun Morogh was cold and long and he did not mind it. He had one thing in the world he wanted and he knew exactly what it looked like, and there are worse ways to be alive than that.
It took him a season to find a shoreline that felt correct.
It was not a famous shore. There was no quest on it, no wreck, no cave with anything in it. It was cobble and cold water and a grey sky that came down close, and the stones went on for a mile in both directions in numbers he could not have counted in a lifetime, and Brannic Wetstone sat down on his heels at the waterline and began.
He was there eleven days. He ate badly. On the fourth day a night elf ranger came down the beach and watched him for a while with the particular patience of someone deciding whether a stranger is dangerous or merely strange. Their name was Nashai and they did not offer it for some time.
"You have been bent over for two hours," they said.
"Aye."
"What is it worth? The thing you are looking for."
Brannic thought about that honestly, because they had asked honestly. "Nothing," he said. "Not a copper. You could not sell it. It is not rare. There are likely ten thousand of them on this beach and I will not find one."
Nashai sat down. They did not say anything for a while. Then they said, "Show me what it looks like," and he drew it in the wet sand with his finger — the hexagons, packed tight as a honeycomb, each one with a small dark eye at the centre where something had once lived and eaten and been alive in a warm sea a long time before there was a Dun Morogh or an Ironforge or a League to be disappointed by.
"It only shows when it is wet," he said. "Dry, it is nothing. You would walk past it. Most people do. That is most of why I like it."
Nashai looked at the drawing in the sand for a long moment. Then they stood, and walked forty feet down the beach, and bent, and picked something up, and turned it over in their hand, and dipped it in the lake.
Then they stood very still.

The orc had been on the beach longer than either of them.
Brannic understood that all at once, the way you understand a thing you have been looking straight at. She was forty yards up the shingle with her back to them, crouched, one hand flat on the stones, and she had not moved in the time it took him to cross the sand. Grey braids. A shaman's totems slung at her hip. Earthen Ring, then — the ones who listen.
Nashai's hand went to their bow without going all the way, which is its own kind of sentence.
“Do not,” Brannic said quietly. “Not on this beach.”
The orc stood and turned, and looked at the dwarf with his pick and the elf with their half-drawn bow, and did not reach for anything at all. “Mokrah Stonesong,” she said. “And if either of you were going to do something about the war, you would have done it before I turned round.”
“We are all bent over looking at the ground,” Nashai said. “It is difficult to be enemies in that position.”
Mokrah barked one syllable of a laugh. Then she saw the stone in Nashai's hand and everything in her face changed, and she crossed the shingle in six strides.
“Wet it again,” she said.
Nashai crouched and dipped it and held it out, and the orc took it in both hands the way you take something from a table you are not sure is yours, and she went very quiet and closed her eyes.
Brannic waited. He had waited six years, so he was good at it.
“You know what this is,” Mokrah said at last, and it was not a question, so he answered it anyway.
“A stone with a hundred rooms in it.”
“No.” She turned it, and the light came off the wet hexagons in that way it does. “Every one of these was somebody. This is a city. They built it out of themselves, one room each, side by side, and they lived in it in a warm shallow sea, and the sea went away, and the stone kept the shape of every single one of them.” She opened her eyes. “It is not a rock that looks like rooms, dwarf. It is a hundred small lives that agreed to hold still.”
Nobody said anything for a while. The lake did what a lake does.
“I have been looking for one for six years,” Brannic said, “and I did not know that.”
“You knew it,” said Mokrah. “You did not have the words. That is why you kept walking beaches instead of doing something sensible.”
Nashai took the stone back from the orc, and then, without any ceremony at all, put it into Brannic's hand and closed his fingers over it.
“I found it,” they said, “and I do not want it. I wanted to see your face when you got one. That was the part I wanted.” They shrugged. “It has been eleven days. You have been eating badly. Take the stone.”
Brannic Wetstone stood on a shore that was not famous, holding a grey rock worth nothing, and could not speak for a moment. The Explorers' League had funded eleven expeditions that year and he had been on none of them, and it did not matter, and had never mattered, and he had known that too without having the words for it.
He got there in the end. “Thank you,” he said.
They made a fire, the three of them, which was treason for at least two of them and possibly all three, and they ate badly together, and Mokrah told them what the ground under the beach used to be, because she could hear it and they could not.
And in the morning Brannic Wetstone put the stone in his coat, and walked forty feet down the shore, and bent over, and started looking again.

The 45th Parallel Line
A cultivar bred to finish outdoors in Leelanau County — and not rot doing it
Most cannabis genetics are bred somewhere warmer, drier, and further south than northern Michigan, and it shows every October. This program has one objective and it is a hard one: something that finishes outdoors up here, in the open, before the frost, without turning to mush in the fall damp.
§1 — Why Here Is Difficult
Two problems, and they pull against each other.
The season is short. At roughly 44.8°N the useful outdoor window runs from after the last frost in late May to the first hard frost, which can arrive in early October and does not negotiate. Photoperiod cultivars begin flowering as the days shorten through August, which leaves a narrow finishing window. Anything bred for a nine or ten-week flower at a southern latitude simply does not get there.
The autumn is wet. Cool nights, heavy dew, fall rain. Dense flowers hold that moisture in their core and botrytis — bud rot — takes the plant from the inside out, often in the last two weeks, after the whole season's work. This is the single largest cause of outdoor loss in the Great Lakes and it is not solved by effort.
§2 — The Asset Nobody Counts
The same thing that makes this cherry country makes it growable. Lake Michigan moderates the peninsulas — it holds spring back so budbreak comes late and misses the frost, and it holds autumn warm at the shoreline longer than the inland map suggests. That is why the fruit belt exists here at a latitude that otherwise should not support it.
A breeding program sited on the peninsulas inherits the fruit belt. Not the inland fields — the water-moderated slopes, the same ground the cherries are on.
§3 — The Method

Cross an early-finishing parent with an open-structured, mould-resistant one. The F1 will look encouragingly uniform, which fools people; the F1 is not the goal. The F2 is where the parental traits segregate and recombine, and that is the only generation where the plant you actually want can appear.
Then pheno-hunt: grow the F2 population out, large enough that rare recombinants have a chance to show, and select on the criteria below. When one is right, keep it as a mother and clone it — a cutting is genetically identical, so the individual is preserved indefinitely without hoping seeds reproduce it. Backcross to the early parent to fix the finish date, and expect three or four seasons before anything deserves to be called a line.
§4 — Selection Criteria

§5 — Legal Frame
So this program and CC-SITE-001 are two different legal animals, and the breeding work does not depend on the shop happening. Confirm current limits at source before acting; the numbers move.
§6 — The Honest Part
You grow a hundred and you keep one. The other ninety-nine were not failures of technique — they were the population you had to grow in order for the one to be findable at all. There is no shortcut where you plant the keeper directly.
Pheno-hunting is beach-combing with a calendar. Same posture, same ratio, same person doing it. He has been describing this project for years, which is roughly the right timescale — a line takes three or four seasons, and he has been thinking about it for longer than that, which means the slow part is already done.

went to leland today not to look for anything just to walk around. stood at the river mouth for a while where it goes into the lake.
i got baptised there. i was too little to remember it but my mom points at the spot every single time we drive through and she did it again today from the car.
and im standing there and it hits me that the leland blue is in that same water. they dumped the slag off the smelter right there and the lake has been rolling it around for 150 years making it beautiful and thats the exact same water i went into.
i think the shop should be in leland. i think it should be jewelry. i think thats the one that actually happens first because it doesnt need anybody to give me permission.

Merch, Supreme, and What a Thing Is Worth
On conferred value, drop culture, and why this belongs on a website about rocks
Supreme opened on Lafayette Street in New York in April 1994. This website is a portal to 1994. That is a coincidence and it is also the least interesting thing this document has to say.
§1 — The Mechanism
A small quantity, released on a fixed weekly schedule, to a queue that is always longer than the stock. Everything else — the resale market, the bots, the cook groups, the camp-outs, the second-hand price that is a multiple of retail — falls out of that one design decision. Scarcity is not a consequence of demand here. It is manufactured first, and demand is built on top of it.
This is not a criticism. It is a description, and it happens to be one of the most successful designs in the history of retail. VF Corporation bought the brand in 2020 for around $2.1 billion; EssilorLuxottica bought it from them in 2024 for meaningfully less, which tells its own story about what exactly was purchased.
§2 — The Logo, and Where It Came From
White condensed italic type in a red rectangle. The debt to the artist Barbara Kruger — who has worked in exactly that register for decades — is total and has never been seriously disputed.
When Supreme sued another brand for borrowing the look, someone asked Kruger for comment. Her entire reply was: “What a ridiculous clusterfuck of totally uncool jokers.” It remains the best thing anyone has said about the streetwear industry.

§3 — The Brick
In 2016 they sold a brick. A clay brick, with the logo on it, retailing for about thirty dollars. It resold immediately for several hundred, and people have used it as a punchline ever since.
It is not a punchline. It is the purest object the entire industry has produced, because it strips out every excuse. It is not comfortable, it is not wearable, it does not function. Its material value is close to zero. Every dollar of its price is conferred — agreed on by people, attached to an object that did nothing to earn it.

§4 — The Argument
Leland Blue is industrial waste. It is the slag from an iron operation that shut down in the nineteenth century, dumped in the lake because it was worthless. People now drive hours to Fishtown to look for it and it gets set in silver and sold as jewellery. Nothing about the material changed. What changed is that the smelter closed, the supply stopped, the lake made it smooth, and a story got attached.
That is the same mechanism as the brick. Manufactured scarcity and a story, versus accidental scarcity and a story. The only real difference is that one was scheduled by a marketing department and the other by a business going under in the 1880s.
So a person who collects Leland Blue and also cares about drops is not holding two unrelated interests. He is interested in one thing from two directions — how worth gets assigned to objects that do not have it built in.
§5 — The Skill, Named
Look at what is actually on this website.
Walking a mile of cobble to find one stone in ten thousand. Growing a hundred plants to keep one. Knowing which piece on the beach is slag and which is only a grey rock. Knowing which release will hold value and which is dead stock in a month.
That is one skill. It is the ability to look at a large undifferentiated pile and correctly identify the one item worth taking, and it does not care whether the pile is a beach, a grow tent, or a drop. Pheno-hunting, beach-combing and resale are the same motion performed on different inventory.
It is also, not incidentally, the entire skill required to run a shop.
Christopher's Big Cherry
There is one thing on this website that is not documented, and this is the folder it is not documented in.
The program has produced a white paper, a patent, an operator's manual, a prototype study, a field guide, a site plan, a breeding register and a bucket list. Every one of them says exactly what it is on the front page.
This one does not, and that is deliberate, because he asked for it that way, which anyone can confirm by checking the obvious place.
What can be stated openly: it is not a rock; it has been in the works for years; it is bigger than the shop; and at least two other tabs on this site are already about it without saying so.
Everything else in this file is sealed pending the key.

Every other tab on this site is one piece of it. The jewellery shop in Leland is the storefront. The Lake Leelanau site is the room. The breeding line is the back half. The stones are the inventory. The bucket list is the reason to stay. The rock machine is the proof he finishes things.
The Big Cherry is all of it, at once, in one town, under his own name — a place on the water in Leelanau County where the coffee, the counter, the case of Leland Blue and the old computers are all the same business, and the business is just Christopher, open, most days.
That is why this file is sealed and the others are not. The others are projects. This one is the life, and you do not put the life in a white paper with a revision letter on it.
He has been at this for fourteen years. Not loudly, and not for an audience — at a kitchen table, most nights, since 2012, through thirty-one notebooks, while working a job and telling almost nobody. The shop is not a daydream he had recently. It is the fourteenth year of the same evening.
He already has the stone. He is still looking. That is not the sad part — that is the best part.

Going down is free and takes four minutes. Coming back up is neither. The sign at the Lake Michigan Overlook says so in plain language, and the number on it — around three thousand dollars for a rescue — is not a joke and is not adjusted for how sorry you are.
Tap CLIMB to go up. The sand gives way under you the whole time and it gives way harder the steeper it gets. Stop tapping and you slide. Slide all the way to the bottom three times and somebody is coming to get you.

Four hundred and fifty feet of loose sand, and Lake Michigan doing the thing it does from up here. Nobody is coming to get you and you owe nothing.
This is the easy direction. Everyone who needs the helicopter went down first, because down is four minutes and feels free.
